I recently installed an LED cup holder mod in my 2015 Hyundai Elantra. The installation directions intructs me to tap into two wires (for power and ground) from a factory harness that connects to my center console. The power wire is actually an illumination wire (turns on with headlights).
I didn’t want to damage or mutilate any of the factory wires so I decided to go another route. Since my head unit already has an illumination wire, I ended up powering the cup holder LEDs by connecting them to the illumination wire and it works perfectly! The cup holders are only illuminated when my head lights are on, just how I wanted.
I’m planning on installing a few more mods that I also want to control with the headlights (meaning powering them with the illumination wire just like the cup holders). For example, I am planning on replacing the factory Hyundai logo on my hood with an illuminated one. Obviously it would be pointless to have this on during the day so controlling it with my headlights would be ideal.
With that said, here is my question: is it safe to connect these mods so my head unit’s illumination wire? What about connecting the illumination wire to a distribution block to distribute the signal to multiple accessories? Is this safe?
