Different tyes of foam

After reading through the sound deadening thread I have the urge to quiet my car. My question is are there other sources of foam found locally that will work to quiet your car? I have come across closed cell foam pads for underneath sleeping bags and cut able floor pads for working out and using in the garage. A local fabric store also sells foam sheets in different thickness and density, this looks like regular open cell egg carton foam. I'd really like to use the closed cell camping pad for behind my door speakers instead of the open cell spongy stuff if it will work. Any thoughts?

it looks like squares of that stuff are already in there, I would like to improve on that a little. Did you use the carpet stuff and notice a difference?

At the moment I'm finishing one door completely and leaving the other side stock so I can do a little comparison. It also helps to have one side untouched in case you need to work out where some screws go back.

So anyone else, no thoughts on foam? I'm going to cut up the sleeping bag mat and try it out. Can't hurt right? When I get the other door done I might try the other kind of foam and see if I notice a difference.

I definately wouldn't put the open cell stuff in your doors. It will soak up moisture quicker than a fat chick scarfing down a big mac. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Just get some deflex pads for behind the speakers.
I've seen those, I might order them if nothing else works. This is the first time I've tried this so I'm not even sure what it's really going to do or if I can even tell the difference. Just trying to find uses for some locally available foam types, not just for behind the speaker but for in the doors and behind panels. Someone suggested carpet padding. My car has stuff that looks like it behind the panels already, not too much of it though and if that's already there then I'd like to improve on that a bit. Just wondering what others have tried and how it's worked for them.

lol, for sure! That is definitely what I want to stay away from. I couldn't find any scotch guard mildew preventive anyway.

Here is the sleeping bag mat I used. It is closed cell and has a slight egg carton shape to it which I'm hoping will do something. I cut a 12x12 piece and used 3M 77 spray adhesive to attach to the Dynamat on the outer door skin.
