Difference between tuning @ 35hz vs 29 or 30hz

Okay, quick question..

plan on having a new box built for my new car (05 trailblazer), and i want to build it right for this sub (07 re xxx 18")

re "generally recommends for most applications" 9 cubes @ 34hz.

from what i've been told, since i don't know MUCH about box tuning and building is that whatever you 'tune' the box to, that frequency will be the 'peak' note the sub hits...ie if a song hits hard at 32 hz and your sub is tuned to 32hz, that song will especially hit hard...correct me if im wrong, i dont know a lot about them.

also, my current box was tuned at 35hz. i didn't like the way it sounded, and in certain songs the SUPER lows were almost non-existant.. IE in yung joc's 'patron'..after it hits, it goes even lower..

i was considering doing a 28, 29 or 30hz tuning.

question to you all - what major difference will i notice going from 35hz to 28-30hz? will it 'rumble' more? will it sound better?

I tuned my 8 cube box at 30 hz on 2 Destroyers D 1ohm ("conservatively rated at 2000rms ea.") on a Rockford T20001bd (2300rms at 1 ohm) and bottomed one out....shiipseki(sp?) informend me that the 30hz tuning was too low...hence the poor performance of the drivers

Plotted in TermLabs's box building program...with the destroyers in an 8 cube box at 30hz the response was alot flatter than that of a 35hz box....meaning less peaky...flatter fq. response...better sound...but tougher on the drivers....it will shake the shit out of my truck but the power handeling (suspension wise..not coil wise) was greatly reduced.

anywho..hope that helps

EDIT: the current volume (not mentioned) of the box you're using may have something to do with the non-existant lows

how come i see people tuning their XXX's to 28hz on 2,3000 watts with no issues?

i just want to be able to hit ALL of the lows, and the box i had either SUCKED big time (would be no surprise) or 35hz was too high..

You can tune as low as you want, but it's silly because peak will be around tuning. Very few songs have tones/notes down into the 20s, most bass notes are in the 30s and 40s. So tuning around 32-40 hz is generally practiced in car audio.

oh no, the box was the re recommended compact, 6cubes @ 35hz.

i'm thinking 28 and 29 is a little too low, so...

how would 9 cubes @ 32 or 34 hz sound compared to the 6cubes@35hz?

like with this current box, when a note goes so low i see shit in my car vibrating (the air is moving) but i dont feel or hear any bass..

i wouldnt put it past the company who made my box to have made me a super-sucky box, and/or the size of it just isnt enough.

i now have the room, so 9 cubes wont be a problem..

i just want to be able to play songs like 'hoods run down' by lil wyte and just destroy on all the notes.

ur peak wont be near ur tunning its usually 4-7+ notes higher, depending on the box/port size. but if u want mroe rumble tune it lower. 30hz isnt really too low of tuning, its the size of the box, that determines if u bottom an woofer out or not. of course if u have an huge box and tuned low its not gonna sound good. but if u keep the box in the medium/small range tuned low u cant go wrong at all!

box size plays about an 90% roll when it come to picking up certain notes. if u want more low end u can go to an bigger box. id go an bigger box and tune around 32hz.

If you want to hit the lows with that sub, throw it in about 9-10 cubes sealed. That sub will destroy the lows in that enclosure and should still be pretty **** loud.

Porting that sub will probably give you a really peaky sound and I would bet not much low end unless you tune to like 25hz. Even then, I would think it would sound like ***.

That sub is just not a good sub to port and I can't imagine a company actually recommending it.

RE has 2 different recommendations...ported and sealed, just different values.

for the 18" XXX:

Sealed/Optimal: 4.0

Ported/Optimal: 9cubes@34hz

I am very well aware of that. I would not listen to them at all for this sub.

If you really want it to perform well with your front stage and if you want it to get low, I would really seal it. Sealed, that sub would destroy the Patrone song and it would definitely get down on Hoods run down.
