WASHINGTON (AP) - Millions of air travelers may find going through airport security much more complicated this spring, as the Bush administration heads toward a showdown with state governments over post-Sept. 11 rules for new driver's licenses.

By May, the dispute could leave millions of people unable to use their licenses to board planes, but privacy advocates called that a hollow threat by federal officials.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who was unveiling final details of the REAL ID Act's rules on Friday, said that if states want their licenses to remain valid for air travel after May 2008, those states must seek a waiver indicating they want more time to comply with the legislation..

This I don't see as a really big deal. kind of a more up to date social security card? When/If they start to try and put some chip in me is when I will be nuts.

I am pretty sure the chip in it is like the ones you see on these credit cards, not an rfid but a different type of chip than the old magnetic stripes that only usually held a bunch of numbers.

Kind of like how an SD card holds up to 10GB now, well these new cards will hold up to that much info which is without a doubt going to the beginning of some type of bullshit takeover by the government.

What you wonder about is wtf is all the data they are going to keep on it. We may see it where your REAL CARD which is probably going to be your new license also has you medical insurance, car insurance, prescriptions, medical history, allergies, auto registration information credit cards info possibly?

Sounds kind of helpful until you realize it does not sound too bad until some ******* hacks the server and jacks everyones shit and some kid out in Maylasia is ordering some rims for his ride with your credit card information. I think the bad outweighs the good when considering consolidating all that personal information in one location.
