Did I blow my tweeters or ruin my xovers?

I have Polk Audio Momo MMC6500 components installed in my QX4. The mid-woofers and tweeters were placed in the stock locations, and the xovers were placed under the Alpine HU in the dash. I am using a Kicker KX700.5 to push 1 JL Audio 12w3v2 d4, MMC6500 Components, and a set of DB675 also by Polk. Everything was installed by a local shop with a good reputation. So, I hope/trust that everything was done correctly. After several days of reasonably hard listening I began to notice a fluctuation in the treble produced from the tweeters at the same points on the same songs, then the tweeters got really loud briefly (about a minute), followed by nothingness. The tweeters no longer produce any sound; however, I noted that everything else still plays fine. At the time of the loss of treble I observed a distinct odor from what I would think was a burnt electronic circuit board. I have never used silk dome tweeters so I have no idea what they do or how they smell when they blow. The smell still lingers in the truck actually. My question is does this sound like I burned out my crossovers if that is possible (maybe unlikely because my mid-woofers still play fine unless the highs section was destroyed), or does it sound like I blew my tweeters. Or did I do both. I already ordered replacements but I wanted to know if there was anything I should check before I take the truck back to the installers with the new set that arrives on Thursday.

you should have brought it there when it happened and let them decipha whats wrong, they installed the system, shouldn't they be responsible if something were to break due to their work?

I think you shoudl have taken it to the installers first to see what was wrong. Depending what was wrong or what happened, if they just replace the parts it might happen again.

I kinda find it weird that both tweets woudl burn out at the exact same time however. Then gaain same as the crossovers.

I took it to Mike's on Airline. I bought all my materials over time through the internet then went in and had them build a box and install my materials. I had everything even the install kit when I went in. They do not sell Polk Audio, so in the event something needs to be replaced I figured I wanted to have it and not have to wait on them to order it. If the new components are not needed I will just send it back for a refund.

I used CA's insight in building my system. User opinions on the MMC6500 's and Kicker KX700.5 were very persuasive. I cannot wait to replace my HU though. When I got the truck it had an Alpine CDA-9803 in it, and I need three sets of pre-outs as oppossed to the two I have as well as full ipod functionality. I want the 2006 Pioneer Premier 980BT or 780MP, but Pioneer is truly taking their sweet time releasing those units to market.

Thanks for the welcome.

It turns out that I did blow both tweeters and one of the crossovers was not functioning. I was told to play the system lower and I should be fine. After I replace the headunit and eliminate some of the distortion introduced by using y connectors and low voltage preouts I should have a wider dynamic range. At any rate the faulty crap has been replaced and all is well.
