Here is the deal. My friend has 2 Kicker CVR 12" hooked up to a Power Acoustik 1800w mono class d amp. My friend and I were listening to a bass cd the other day and smoke started to pour out from under the seat with a bad smell. We thought at first that it was the amp because the smoke was coming up from under the seat and that is where the amp is. When we got out of the truck we looked at the speakers to see if they were ok. They were a little warm and with the key out of the truck they were giving a very quiet squealing noise. We turned the speakers back on and they still beat but they have a rattle to them as if it is a static. Now my question to you is did he blow them or did he blow his amp? Could it be a transistor in the amp went bad?

The amp most likely spooged some of its capacitor juice out... meaning it is now less powerful than before. the subs sound like they're half blown.. the voice coils are half unwound and that is the rattling your hearing.

Over all, I'd like to say nice going on ruining all that equipment. How did you have it all wired together? did you set the gains properly? those two items if not done correctly can cause exactly what happend to you. once again, nice one.

I built a ported box for a guy with a single 15" CVR running off a t1000 and he went 3 days and then he started having smoking from the sub, so he switched to a 15"MTX sub and has had no smoking, but i hear that the CVR have weak voice coil and are prone to smoking.

Nah, he just over powered them(clipped). RF's amps are underated too.

Yeah ditto on that. the CVR's have great VC's

But he doesn't have a RF amp he has a PowerAcoustik 1800w mono class D amp.

By the way these subs have hit lower and harder than what they did when his system started to smoke. He has been running this system for almost a year now. It has never given him a problem. Why all of a sudden would they just go out.

On the bass cd does it have any tracks where the subs are moving but make no noise. If so, throw that disc away. Another thing is that ever since kicker moved their production plant to Mexico or wherever kids work for free, their quality just went out the door. Go with Diamond Audio or maybe get some American built TREO subs.

well I am goign to hook it it up to my system to see if it is the speakers or the amp. And no they did not just go out because of age they are great speakers and never have given any sign of blowing.
