DEH-P6900UB iPod problem

I have an iPod mini, 1st gen. It's current version is 1.4.1 I think. I plug it in to the HU via an iPod cable, and when I select USB as the source it gives me some shit like "N/A USB". So I installed rockbox to hopefully make it recognizeable as a hard drive, and now when I plug it in, I get a message saying "Unrecognizable format" or someting. I don't know what to co, and I really wanna get my iPod working in this car. Any suggestions?
