Define SQ.

Alright, before you heckle me for asking a stupid question, I know that SQ is sound quality. What I'm asking is, when you say "woofer x has better SQ than woofer y," what do you mean? What do you look for in a woofer when you are grading it's SQ?

I haven't had the opportunity to listen to very many setups, so I really have no idea how to judge SQ the way you guys do.

from what i've learned just by reading these forums, there are three kinds of subs, SPL subs, SQL subs and subs that do well in both. And unless i'm mistaken SPL is just pure bass and volume. so people that just want to piss off their neighbors, or have the loudest bass, buy SPL subs.

SQL subs are subs that have very good clarity, more like 'punchy' bass i guess.

but afterall I still am a car audio noob, and i don't know much, so you might want to wait for a second answer just to make sure.

Tightness of bass. Accuracy of bass reproduction. Mechanical noise levels without clipping. Smooth long notes. Quick short notes. All of these have an effect on sound quality one way or another. Other factors include how dry or wet the bass is. If the bass is too dry you will get the mechanical sound commonly found in subs like Audiobahn and the like. If the bass is too wet it will sound muddy/sloppy. Judging the sound quality of a sub is like rating a fine wine... no two subs are the same and each make requires a clear palette prior to sampling.

I think squeak summed it up in the thread about this a few days ago. The definition of SQ is not subject to the listener. It depends on the ability of the set-up to reproduce the given material as close to the origonal as possible. Or something like that, and I found it quite hard to argue the point //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Right, and so is beauty, but I think we'd all agree Jessica Alba is pretty hot...
I know it's subjective, but I want to know what YOU listen for when determining SQ. Simple question.
SQ to everyone is different..

Pretty much right.

Sound quality, pure and simple, is how accurately the source material is reproduced. There is no subjectivism, opinion or personal preference here. Either the system accurately reproduces the source (good sound quality) or it doesn't (poor sound quality).

Now, whether or not you prefer how something sounds is totally different (and irrelevant to true sound quality). If you like 145db of bass with only 110db of highs and that is not how the source material is recorded, then that is NOT sound quality no matter how you look at it. That is your personal preference, however.

Your personal preference in sound is subjective.
Sound quality is a fixed entity.

Yeah people confused SQ with preference too frequently...

Im sure my system has horrible SQ, but to me, it sounds great //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

true....

fixed entity, but rarely used daily.....I have never, ver seen a street car with a flat response...look at any EQ, you'll never see it flat.

lol, cmon tracy - you know the EQ most likely wont be flat. if the rta is picking up a peak at 1khz, you gotta cut 1khz to make the response flat //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

anyway. in my oppinion, (other than reproducing the source material accuratly) a good sq system is one that blends well, its hard to tell that the speakers are down low and the sub is in the trunk (ie: high+forward soundstage and good imaging), has great midbass, the highs are smooth and detailed, the bass is not overpowering, and the entire setup is extremly efficent. this means no 2kw amps for the sub and crap. lol. the less power you can feed the equipment, and the louder (meeting the above criteria) you can get it to be, is what like.

i like to ask people what they run, they respond, "four twelves in a high tuned ported box and two thousand watts! i hit 143db's at the comp on the TL"

and i get to say, oh yea? i have six hundred watts and a pair of 15's sealed and i hit 142db's on the tl.

those numbers are purly out of my ***. but i love it. just makes them feel like idiots //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

but thats my oppinion about SQ. refrence speakers = my friend.

i get what squeak is saying, but if audio was run by that, then the so called "audiophile" speakers would be better than others because they are "accurate".
