Or maybe he means break-up modes?

I've seen both terms widely used/published, never knew which one was correct.

Modes generally refer to the pattern of nodes (transverse or longitudinal patterns of nodes). I suppose either term would work, but I still suspect he meant nodes (more specific). Either way I was just poking at him a lil, dont take it too seriously.

as in the manner, way, or method in which the cone breaks up...

I just looked at the revelator's data sheet, it does indeed say modes.
