ok here goes-- My box is 4.9 cubic feet before displacement. It is tuned to 36hz. But it misses a lot of notes, and sounds like it is choking. there is not a lot of port at all, it is 3.5 inches in diameter, and only 1.5 inches deep. I used the12volt.com calculator to build it, and it told me to do this, so i did. But doesnt sound like a good idea, can anyone help me fix this ??

I'm only a beginner by comparison, but you could relly use an online calculator to figure out the specs for your port, but when you plug in the various numbers, use the numbers that would be true for ONE of your subs, then just double it (if you're using a slotted port) or just use 2 ports. It may not do much, but give it a try.

PVC ports....go with two 6"ers, they basically act like a slot port unless you use the actual Aero ports. This is still kind of light on port area but should do well. DD recommends you take the box's net volume and multiply it by 16 to get the area of port necessary for a given box, I used to not do this but I have since fould this calc to be AWESOME and I will never go back, my 10" sub with 1500 watts using this formula sounds better than my old AQ HDC315A with 3500 watts in a 6th order!!!
