For those of you guys that thought it wasn't possible for DD subs to be musical or a ported box to be accurate...well it is possible. And it won the Sound Quality Category!!!

Jim Becker aka Big Red won in first place in 2 Categories: SQC1 & Amateur

IASCA Western US Regionals Oct. 24th in Riverside, CA

The subs are DD9515's with CF dustcaps. The have a ton of playing time on them with a whole lot of bass race runs. The car can easily win bassrace 139 classes with a linear response. The subs have never been reconed yet, maybe soon. The box is a large compression tuned enclosure designed for high output with perfect transient response...one of my designs. Provide EQ assist, the enclosure did amazed many people in the car audio industry. The rest of the system is nothing less of amazing from install to tuning. Jim did an awesome Job building the car.

This is just to show that sealed boxes are not the only way to go for sound quality and musical response. I'm going to say again and again, a ported enclosure will always have a better transient response.

I'm going to be meeting up with Jim shortly. I'll be doing videos hopefully pushing the subs beyond their limits, break them and reconing a fresh pair...after I come back from DD. The car will be featured in a few magazines shortly, I'm sure.

i my self believe ported alignments can sound excellent, but what it takes to have a excellent sounding natural nuteral driver the 9500 just doesn't do it.. ive seen l7s hdcs amoung a few woofer i wouldn't call sq win... its highly install dependant..

im not knocking DD or anyone.

to a person that builds/designs woofers, the 9500 is a awesome spl woofer..

low mms, low le, brutal motor strength, excellent cooling, extremely tuff soft parts and excellent glue, joints and build..

on the other hand it has 18mm xmax, cms curve isn't very special it hits 4x around 20mm.. the bl curve is anything but highly linear, and the actual low q, low vas high fs design is clearly optimized for larger higher tuned boxes with alot of port area.. when ported any real SQ properties go stright out the window...

He got a 20 on the sub bass portion...that's a PERFECT score.

TS parameters are only physical meanings/descriptions. How you interpret the parameters and design the system to accommodate for the parameters is the most important. It's all in the install. But I can tell you that DD subs are the best candidate to make ported enclosures sound dead accurate.

I don't think anybody can deny the score.

I believe its sealed when he does iasca and ported for fun times.
Hi James,

No, that's not the case. Jim tried to seal it off with a linear actuator thinking that it was going to help, however, the result was the ported enclosure was perfect. What was used at the show is pure ported. Jim's flat/linear sound quality setup can crank an easy 147 db on the Termlab.

Why does everyone keep saying "Jim Beckers Car" ? That ginormous truck is far from a car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Tuan, thanks for the props, and designing and awesome enclosure. For those that are wondering, Tuan is the man for designing sub enclosures, and it is the only piece in the truck that has not been changed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

For those wondering, the box is ported and was never used sealed in competition, EVER. I did receive a perfect score at the Western Regional Iasca finals in the sub category. There is no equalization done on the sub....period. anybody may have a listen and I will show you my eq settings. I did try to go sealed with an actuator, but it flat out sounded like ***. I have just not taken the actuator out at this point.

DD is the real deal //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The front stage is Hybrid Audio. L831-3. IB on the 8" midbass and IB on the 3" midrange, for those that were wondering //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

still running those zuki amps? I wouldn't mind giving them a try....bit out of my budget tho //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
