i was wondering if anyone had tried to run all of their computer components directly off some regulated dc supply from their car battery?

Also any different ways of powering computers other than inverrters ?

any and all replies'd be greatly appreciated //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif thanks

dc to ac to dc just seems so wasteful (around 20% power conversion lost..)

well the computer componets need 12 volts but i didnt think you could just connect the power cable from your car battery to your hard drive, or cd drive 'such wouldnt that be bad ?

The power supply in a computer is a ac to dc inverter, so its a huge waste of power

Your going to need a whole cocktail of voltages, what youll need is a whole bunch of regulators and youll end up building some higher current linear supplies to, read the side of your power supply is has some of the voltages needed.

didnt take my link did ya;

regulated dc to dc for 180$....

150W Power Supply

OPUS Solutions Smart DC-DC power supply (Patent Pending) is designed specifically for ATX, uATX, FlexATX, Mini ITX motherboards used in an automotive enviroment.

- 150 Watt output.

- Built in auto shutdown.

- Delayed shutdown timer up to 1 hour.

- Wide input voltage range.

- Ignition or on/off switch input.

- High Efficiency (extended battery life).

OPUS Solutions SFX DC-DC smart power supply, PATENT PENDING, is designed specifically for ATX motherboards to be used in an automotive environment. This product brings a new dimension to your PC’s mobility. Just get in your vehicle and start the engine; your PC is ready to go. When you switch off the ignition the PC can go into shut down, standby or hibernate modes automatically, no switch to

fiddle or fuss!

The SFX DC-DC Power supply has a micro-controller that controls and monitors various functions of the power supply operation. It monitors automobile battery voltage to protect against deep discharge. The ignition lead is monitored to start the PC when the ignition is turned on and to implement a safe shutdown procedure. It controls and monitors motherboard signals to provide smooth power-up and power down sequences. In addition, it also responds to shut down, stand-by and hibernate modes.

The power supply can be programmed to shut down the PC after a delay of up to one hour.

The power supply outputs are monitored to assure proper PC operation. A green LED indicator in the power supply continually indicates the power system status and health. It is also used for troubleshooting. There are features that are built-in for trouble-free and safe PC operation. The input power is protected against transients, load dumps and double battery during jumpstarts. The PC does not reboot during engine start or cranking. It also uses state-of-the-art technologies and the most advanced techniques to maximize efficiency, performance and reliability. Simply put, there is no other PC power supply like it.
