I don't like doing free weights because I cannot tell if I'm doing them properly.

Just watch the people who are built in the gym when they are on the free weights. Also, there are plenty of videos on the internet to show you the technique for just about every free weight exercise you can come up with. Free weights generally are best though because they help build your stabilizer muscles along with your core muscles.
