Dont cancel it, just cut the card up and forget about it. Or dotn cut it, just put it away and have the self control not to use it. It will help you in the long run. Also, go online and stop paper statements, then you wont get statements int he mail, it will help you forget about it. Youll probly get credit limit raise mails and changes to the agreements mails, but thats about it.

They charge small finance fees each month, but I don't know if that applies when I have no balance. The card is pretty useless.

Theres nothing to apply a finance charge to, if the balance is 0. You reminded me though, does the card have an annual membership fee? Find out if it does, and how much it is. If it doesnt, you should just leave it open. If it does, find out how much it is, if its something small, just pay it each yeah, thats a small price to pay to help your credit a lil bit. To me at least.
