Yeah, while you were out working //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif, I called the guy at HP. He said I would need the internet from time to time for software updates or something like that...
The only thing he didn't explain is how a compter connects to a server. When I asked he started mumbling. I am not sure if it is a complex question or a dumb one.

Another thing he mentioned is formatting of the DVDs. He said the system only accepts certain kinds. He said he often sees DVDs ripped into one kind, but the media center extenders do not recognize it. He said .mpg and .avi. So I guess it doesn't matter, I can always change the file extension so it will recognize it.

So Iam, do you think the HP setup is a way for me to go?
I am not familiar wit hthier setup. I am a DIY when it comes to PCs. HP setup is sounding more proprietary than I care for.

WTF joo roll your eyes about me workin for?

hmmmmmm

Flip what he meant was with no internet you will not receive bug fixes and updates. Similar to if you have no internet on your computer you can not get security fixes and service packs etc.
Probably not a big deal but you may be missing out on some new things without the ability to update it.
That and the TV guides are downloaded from interent and they have some internet media you can play.

You sound like my wife. When I used to get pissed at a secretary she would say, "well, if she had any sense she would not be working for you now would she?" It was a point well taken.
You wife is very wise.

HELLOLZ and LOLLERBYES! That was jo0 yesterday. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I see.
Still no answer on how computers connect to servers....magic?

Looks like ~$1,300 for that HP setup. Could you design something that works the same way, either cheaper or more flexible (ie 1080p)
They connect by using a router and setting up a netowrk. With those box solutions like HP, it is simplistic. Just connect them to a router and they find each other and connect during the setup.

I could easily build something more flxible and od more but not at that cost. It looks to be the easiest solution for you. I am sure their server doesn't use redundnt storage at that cost, but you could add it.
