What is a HDD? SHHD? or RAID Card?
Or does it even matter. You say "Flip, buy this" when you get all the pieces, I will show you how to put it together.

I got where you say I need the keyboard/mouse from time to time...but in my imagination, everything works like on demand from a remote control (like a harmony where I can dim lights, turn on TV, turn on movie....like a real pimp would)

HDD(Hard Disk Drive).

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Drives)

It is a hard drive controller that depending on what type of array, stacks the HDDs together.

RAID 0 Is called a stipe. In this type Data is split between the 2 on reads and writes to increase performance.

RAID1 is a mirror. The same info is written to both disks simultaneously.

Raid 0+1 is 2 mirrored arrays striped for redundancy and speed.

RAID 5 (striped disks with parity) combines three or more disks in a way that protects data against loss of any one disk; the storage capacity of the array is reduced by one disk.

I use 5 because you lose the least space and gain performancefrom the striping nad get some level of redundancy via parity bits.

The remote will run all media functions of it, but it will not turn on your light or draw the curtains for you.

Is it a SATA kind? Apparently, it is quite simple to remove the hard drive out of the PS3 and screw that one in. The PS3 automatically formats and partitions the HDD for PS3/Not PS3.
With that said, some people say Windows Vista tends to have problems.

I think I can make this work!
I have an old computer for the software to "manage" this server (ie rip discs and then put on server). The use the extenders to connect to this server. The only issue is that I think it requires the internet.

Internet isn't required. A router is though to make a network, along with wiring and jacks or you could go wireless on it. Either way you need a netowork but internet isn't necessary. It is nice to have the internet with them though. They grab Cable guides from online and their is additional content with them via internet.
