Probly fixable.

I have them backed up on an external HDD but I wanted to have them since I take my laptop to work. I think I'll just pair down what I have stored on the laptop, but does a full HDD cause a computer to run slow?

If I were you, I'd transfer the money today and it will get there by Monday. Watching AIG on Monday...it will be a high bounce, then profit-taking drop. Then is your time to strike. It may or may not occur. If AIG can sell it's "toxic debt" to the govt as it wants, there will be no profit taking drop.

That is a 64 bit so I doubt it, but then again I don't know the specs of your machine. I don't like Basic versions either. I'd opt for premium. Ultimate won't be necessary though. I am pretty sure you will need more memory for it. You will want a good amount going to Vista and since you have to buy hardware in order to buy an OEM version for system builders it only makes sense to get memory. You really need to make sure all the hardware on the laptop will run under Vista first though.

I would check with licenses through your school though. My dad gets vista ultimate retail from Purdue cal in indiana for like $50.

I may try cleaning up my current XP. If my hard drive is full, would that cause it to be slow? I have 60 gigs of music and 30 gigs of video on a 160 gig HDD.

Yes. 10% of a drives space should be left. otherwise performance is affected.

Make sure to sand then primer then sand then primer again. I know you care somewhat for aesthetics and of you just paint it black it will look hideous for a home imo.

Laptops aren't mean for permanently large amounts of storage. You either need to upgrade the HDD to a larger one or learn to transfer only what you need from the external when going out. If this is an older laptop though(like 2 years old) I would just get an XP Pro CD and format the laptop and do a fresh install.
