The real reason is supposedly the sound of "racking" a shotgun is enough to scare off a criminal. I have read this in several places. I want to take a few classes to know how to shoot it properly. I figure I'd be able to handle a 20ga better than the 12.

If I were to do a drive-by or something, I'd get the 12.

That sound is unmistakeable no doubt. I just think you may be overestimating the kick. The remington 870 (12 guage)is a workhorse of a gum and comes in all kinds of configurations etc. Nothing wrong with a 20 though.

I don't want a hand gun...I am very afraid the bullets are going to explode in my hand when loading the clip. I feel a bit more comfortable with a shotgun as that is what I have used.

Actually, I think a shotgun is better for home defense anyway.

I don't worry so much about the bullets going off in my hand for absulutely no freaking reason.

i told you that was a drunk float if there was one. i barely recall the last time i went down, but on the ride back to drop us off, this drunk chick wanted me to fuck her. i politely declined. she was more of deerhunt's type.

BTW, I think a shotgun is good for home defense as well. If it has to be used it will make a mess, but you shouldn't have to use it methinks.

I sure hope not. I just think I need more than just to buy it....ya know. I'd like to know what I can do instead of just shooting the guy on point. Even if the class is worthless in the end, it may keep me from being charged.
We don't have a castle law or anything like that...but it is up to the police. A random 24 year old with a pistol grip shotgun may be less likely to be charged if he went through a couple gun safety courses first...got some experience shooting it on a range and whatnot.

Here in FL we can just shoot bishes and get away with it. That's how we roll.

I hear wiggler safety courses are the best. I bet it takes some time to learn how to hold a shotgun sideways.
