They were emails expected to be responded to immediately. Serious job consequences for not. Currently, I cannot access work email from home. I would prefer to keep it that way.

Can you get a phone where you could respond by return e-mail no matter where the whims of fate locate you at any particular time of the day?

Yes...all 2nd level managers have blackberries for this very reason. To hell with that I say. I'd rather make $20k less for the abiltiy to disappear. I have a cell phone, but if I don't answer it...it doesn't matter.
