24 gallon nanotank.

No larger tank as she lives in an apt.

If we decide it's something we both really enjoy, perhaps something bigger if/when we get our own place. But I would be more inclined to build a pond.
24 gallons is a nice start especially for an apartment. If you both enjoy it, its pretty hit or miss, than yes upgrade if you get a house together. My buddy has a 92 gallon corner tank and its kick ***. I will try and get a pic and post it.

It never hurts to have two tanks in that case. One in the bedroom (it helps some people sleep) and one in the main living area.

starfish are cool but they can and usually will eat snails. In a small tank its not a huge deal but if you go larger be prepared to waste money on fish. And I recommend not buying fish online. A store usually has a better return policy in case your fish do not get along or die prematurely.

I must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed today. I feel moody. I feel like going to a bar and starting a random fight or something.
The eel gets too big.

I like the hawkfish because it eats shrimp/crabs/etc.

We are limited to about 3 fish and a couple corals/live rock/live sand.

We need some "cleaning" type fish.
True. If you move up to a bigger aquarium then add one. My dad has a 50 gallon with a snowflake eel, 2 clowns, Lion fish, trunk fish, anenomes.

She wants one of those as well. (starfish)
As for the items, I did not find significant savings by going online. I wouldn't buy the fish online anyway. Because they are heterogenous, they may pick out an "ugly" or damaged one.
I have found used is the best way to go about buying equipment. Craigslist, the local paper and garage sales are the best I have found.

As far as fish, I highly suggest going into a specialty fish store and befriending at least one of the employees. Most of the time you will find someone willing to do all the major clean-up work and stuff for a small 'side' fee. Its usually well worth it.

My dad used to have a saltwater fish tank. Horrible investment. Requires constant upkeep, inflow of money to keep it running, and the returns on it's satisfaction are marginal at best.

I would use the money to take yoga classes with your girlfriend (not all yoga is gay, and sooooo many benefits for taking yoga) or some other sport like biking instead.

If you must have a fish tank though, if I remember correctly, fresh water tanks are much cheaper and easier to take care of.

2k, what are some of your favorite Tool songs? I'm really starting to get into them, but I'm having a hard time getting past the first song on a couple of the albums so I don't listen to them at all. So far, AEnima is about all I listen to, but it's so fucking kickass.
