crossovers

do crossovers act like amp? but also filters or would i have to use a seperate amp? like im gonna use preamps on my reciever for the front when i get a component system. would i have to have an amp plus crossover? any other info u guys can give me would be great. is there a website out there that answers these things? thanks

If you use a crossover you WILL need an amp or two.. It only filters the signal and sometimes boost it but it wont help you at all without the amp.

A lot of amps have crossovers built in them as well

If you buy a component set......it will come with a crossover specified for that set and designed by the very same manufacturer. Yes you will need an amplifier. Run your pre-amp singal to the amp then from the amp run to the crossover and to the speakers after that.
