I'm thinking about buying some some subs from craigslist? How do I know if they work, what kinda things should I ask, any other info I should know?

Check the coils with a DMM...

Smell it while running it free air if the coils check out.

I have a sub that reads just fine, but the coils smell slightly. Maybe I shouldn't have put about 1kW of DC power to it and walked away for a minute or two.
