convert avi files to mpeg?

just got a bunch of movies from a friend, there all in AVI format. anyone know how i can convert these to mpeg or a player to play the avi files. ive tried apple quicktime player but it keeps giving me a error

vlc media player. plays everything and its free

Also realplayer sometimes.

also there are a bunch of programs.. just goo avi to mpeg
