I started work for a new job today. They had me sign a paper contract that basically said I could not be associated in any way, including being employed by, any "competitor" type of business within 1 year of ended employment.

Probably a non-compete agreement. Alot of places make you sign them, alot of states don't allow them. Check your local laws if you really give a shit

I am really desparte to finish my internship, so that is that.

I did, however, find some reading about the Idaho laws, and while it is legal, Idaho courts are not enforcing them. And where this is internship, if they try to take me to court, they wont get anything but court fee's anyways.

you need to find out if you live in what is called a "right to work state". you have the right to work and if that is your only skill to make a living then you have the right to work to provide for your family but the only stipulation in a non-compete is that you can't go down the street and work for the next competitor....you'd have to work for someone else that is "more out of the area" so to speak
