ok so ive been having problems with my infinity 6010cs components hooked up to an alpine f240. everything is smooth at about 75% volume (gains set at 61/62 volume on my pioneer using dmm), but sometimes after i crank it, it almost acts like a buffer system and the infinitys stop playing while my sub keeps going. i have el cheapo dmm from harbor freight but i figured id do some random tests to see if i have a short somewhere.

i set it to read ohms (at 200) and put the black lead to the ground and the positive lead to test each speaker wire on each side individually. driver side came up as 1 for both...passenger side gave me 88-90 on both! is this a definite short? ive checked the wire all the way up to the door hinge. thanks

ya here is the setup:

HU: pioneer 4800mp

fronts: infinity ref 6010cs

front amp: alpine f240 (bridged)

sub: jl 12w6v2

sub amp: alpine m450

i just reset the gains so the infinitys see 90x2 (18.9 volts) which is their rms, and the 12w6v2 sees the full "400" from the m450 at 28.28 volts. the infinitys get decently loud but on most cds if i try and go above 50 they cut off while the sub keeps playing. only above 50 can i even hear the sub, it doesnt flex/go to excursion more than an inch at 75% of what the gains were set at. i dont get it.

the box was decently made by the guy i bought the sub from.it appears to have no leaks or anything like that. it measures 19.5" (L) x 12.5" (depth) x 14" (H) and is made of 3/4" mdf. any suggestions?

volume most likely goes to 62. Umm, yeah what did you use to set it as in test tone or music or what? If you used a test tone most of the time the amp puts out a higher voltage for test tones. When you play music instead of a test tone you dont get near the voltage..... i think

tis true for amp in sig. i must do it by ear or it will be super low

i used a 50hz 0db test tone as its the only one i could find. i originally had the gains at 1/2 just basically by ear but this was done using the cheapo dmm. it sucks cus i want to turn it up so i can hear the sub and then wham my highs cut off. tough situation lol. and yes volume goes up to 62. i used 61 to set the gains as thats what was suggested by some people on here

i would set both component amp and sub amp with the HU @ 50/62. That is the highest i listen to mine. I am pretty sure there isnt much clipping going on at that volume.

Try resetting gains with the same test tone for the sub on 50/62 instead.

I dont know what test tone to use for the comps. I do mine by ear.

alright cool ill try that out now and report back. i appreciate the fast replies guys. this is just getting frustrating so im tryin to break it all down

i bought it used from a guy off craigslist, he said he used it for 5 months. came with the box he made for it to "jl specs" and some wiring which i have no use for. i just retuned it by ear for the highs/mids to 50/62 and by dmm for the sub to 50/62. sounds much better in terms of sub output, but the highs still cut out around 46/50 in some songs. the test tones are on an audio cd-r while most of my music is on mp3 cd's, would that make a difference? im thinking 90 watts to these things it should be able to go higher

also i was watching the sub as it played songs like "Put On" and for some of the offbeats (in between the big hits) it fluctuates/moves a lot of air, but doesnt make a lot of sound. is this normal
