Ok so I have a dell dimension 2400 with a celeron. I want to get a new motherboard with PCI-e. If I get a board with the same size socket and transfer all of my existing hardware over to the new mobo, but the new mobo has a higher FSB, will i get an increase in speed.

You won't be able to do that anyway. First of all, you'd have to reload Windows, which can't be done with the restore disc included with the Dell.

Don't do that. It'd be pointless. That CPU would severely hold back any decent PCI-E GPU, so you'd be much better off just building a new computer. Plus the fact that the 2400 is MicroATX, so it has a small case = no good GPU would fit, most likely. And then you'd have to upgrade your PSU too, so trust me, just build a new PC.

go on pricewatch.com and get a new CPU, motherboard and memory combo for cheap. maybe sure it will fit your case. or just start over and buy a new case and a good mother board and CPU, and all the junk, and slap it all together, with windows vista when it comes out.

That's because you have semen for brains. The restore CD is a BIOS specific CD. If he changes motherboards, he no longer meets the requirements for using the Dell restore CD. He would have to buy a new copy of XP.

I used my dell cd on my bros laptop which is an HP, it worked, except it didnt have the same drivers that were needed so i need to use the actual restore CD's. But it did let me install it.

I think on the newer Dell's you get you don't actually get an XP install disk, at least my friend didn't get one with his laptop. On my old old old desktop from Dell I got a XP install disk though.

I've never been able to load Windows from a retail restore disc. I've always run into errors regarding BIOS identification.

yeah...well i am just trying for a cheap solution until i go to college next fall...i just want to be able to play games...maybe ill just get a geforce 5500 for reg pci

You could build a half decent PC for $700-$800 though.
