on windows XP in safemode, open the start menu, run, msconfig, enter.

startup tab: disable everything but antivirus

services tab: check hide all microsoft services and remove all non antivirus service.

General tab: selective starup, uncheck process win.ini

save and reboot

if it still freezes you either have a virus in the kernel or you have a bad piece of hardware.

if it's in your kernal you're pretty much fuked and will have to reinstall windows, that's what i had to do.
