Check out this ROSEWILL unit... yes, Rosewill! Johnnyguru did some excellent testing of this unit and found it to be kind of a gem for a bargain price. I was actually pretty impressed, bought it for my neighbor's rig that I was building, and it's been running just fine now for about 8 months. Excellent for your needs, and probably available under $50 at the Egg now.

I am even considering buying one to replace my possibly failing Silverstone. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

thanks for all the replys. im still in the process of planning but i spoke with my girlfriend and since we already have a desktop , i think we'd benifit more from a laptop instead and in case i ever wanted to get a TL id have a lappy.

im selling all the computer parts i have to fund up for it and ill update my FS thread with details. any particular brands i should stay away from? i was thinking of going with a refurb'd compaq , toshiba or an acer from tigerdirect. sorry for the indecisiveness.

antec power supplies > all

well at least thats how it was 2 years ago when i was into computers.... they make some SOLID stuff

edit: please dont buy a compaq. I would go with acer over toshiba, depending on specs of course. you can get some GREAT deals on toshiba satellites though

any reason in particular? i know acer is usually pretty good about bang for the buck type deals and i seen alot of pretty nice toshiba's at office depot for fairly cheap ( i wont be buying from there though unless i se something that really catches my eye). how about HP and sony's if i can find one cheap enough.?

sonys are nice but pricey for what u get, and every HP ive seen wasnt particularly amazing... on my friends HP, about 6 random keys just stopped working over time, plus he had random BSOD's and other problems, but maybe he got a lemon. ive always liked the look of HPs myself.

if it were me id buy a dell, asus, acer, or if u can find a sony cheap enough. actually i currently own a dell and love it, but make sure u get a great warranty for whatever u have (just in case, because its a BIG purchase)

Antec doesn't make PSUs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif They usually use FSP as their OEM, which is decent, as I said, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Good bang for the buck, though.
Silverstone (Enhance/Etasis/Seventeam, depending on series) and Corsair (Seasonic) would be my first choices ...

their true line is REALLY good

I repeat, Antec does not MAKE power supplies ... They sell power supplies made by another company (in this case, Fortron aka FSP) ... and their TruePower line had major problems when it first came out ...
well EXCUSE ME make, sell, whatever their name is on them. I had a true430 back in the day with a beefy computer and it gave me absolutely zero problems

The current line of Toshibas (U300, A200, P200) have serious motherboard issues. I've seen a ton of them come back, not even a month old, w/ various problems related to the motherboard, most significantly and popular being that they won't power up at all. If it weren't for that, I'd probably recommend them because they have really sturdy chassis, nice screens, and good build quality all the way around while staying competitive as far as performance for the price goes.
Acer generally offers good bang for the buck and their customer service is awesome, but the quality of their chassis is **** for most of their budget (Travelmate & Aspire) series. I see tons of units where the chassis is cracking at the hinges.

Sony makes good quality laptops, but they're expensive for the performance you get and their service is complete ****.

HP is usually decent, but not the best quality. I'd say they offer one of the best products for the dollar at the moment. Same w/ Dell, but you get customer service from a person who actually speaks English.

I haven't use a lot of their laptops, but Asus seems to be a good choice as well.

very good stuff to know, thanks alot. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

can you swap out hardware in a laptop like you can a desktop? sound/video cards , motherboard etc. and with all these new processors out what should i look into?

ive always preferred amd. when i decided to let an older computer fry , i was running its amd duron at 220+ degrees for almost a month before it died. should i stick with them?

Going by this, id just go with a Toshiba and hope the motherboard doesnt take a crap. Ive heard about quite a few of them getting the black screen & end up being sent in for repair while being less then a month old.

Is Toshibas customer service any good?

As you said, Acer's build quality isnt all that great, sony isnt exactly great for the $, etc. Ive been on the fence with laptops for a while now, id love to pick on up but the problem ive been noting is that they're all somewhat inconsistent compared to the previous models. One year something is great, then it does a 180.
