This became slightly wordy - forgive me...
I'm setting up a basic system in our 82' MB 300TD wagon. There is no 'good' place for amps or speakers, so I'm building a single movable unit (which will house 2 6x9 speakers, and an amp) to place atop the rear seats when 'folded up' - they mostly live in that position.
I'm a full-time musician, and the cargo area is fully reserved for gear - so...
My plan is the single unit - custom fit and padded - will place a 6x9 directly behind each front seat, at around shoulder level - pointed up. I have a nice little old-school Kenwood amp (50x2 rms), which will sit between the speakers, and ride a bit forward over the center arm rest... add a heat shield screen over the amp, and a pair of grab bars running the lenth, over the top.
I'll be able to swing the entire unit - still hooked up - back to the rear wheel wells when using the rear seats - that's the plan, anyway...
(The stock locations for speakers are 3" or so - I'll just leave those for now.)
A nice Alpine deck is planned for some time in the future, but for getting things started, I have a low-mileage vintage Kenwood twin-shaft - KRC-2006
Yes, old school, but (as those in the know know) puts out a nice clean sound, and has a respectable receiver...
I'm in my early 40s - listen to jazz, 40s-50s, some Junior Brown to Jack Johnson, etc.
OK, enough with the ramble. I'm wondering how the basic 'over the counter' 6x9s compare sonically with each other. Pioneer has scared me in the past with piss poor sounding stuff - that 'may' have changed.
Using Kenwood deck and amp - should I simply assume I'll be happy with a pair of 2 or 3 ways from them?
Should I look to Alpine?
Other suggestions?
I'll mention, a well designed 2 way should be hard to beat...
I'm not wanting to break the bank here - something reasonable.
I do, though, have well trained and babied ears - full vintage Mc setup in house, + Concept, etc.
So - keep in mind - smooth and accurate - but not at the cost of sacrificing dynamics and life...
Fire away!
