Ok, this has been bugging me for a very long time, and forgive me if this is really stupid. Is there any real reason why a sub needs to in a dual voice coil configuration other than wiring options and the increased windings?

You answered your own question. Impedience options is the only difference between svc and dvc. no performance or powering handle difference no matter what anyone says

For SPL competition you can hook up more amplifiers to the same size coil as well.

You can hook 8 mono block Amps to a quad coil sub, for example..
