Coil is stuck in gap, help!!!! broke in 2

well I did the glue to dj's specs...as for the coil, I'm not sure why it did that. the spiders were fine...but I did hook it up to the 120 outlet to end its life...it still worked after about 15 sec, but the breaker kept flipping....the coil was just starting to seperate

I knew you had to do something drastic to get that much damage! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I always use ca glue on the surrounds and have never had them come apart.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Where's the vid?!?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

nope got it guys.....was easy actually...and **** the glue dj gave me really didn't seem too strong
I hit the spider landing once with a hammer and the whole thing pretty much came off, and out came the rest of the coil with a hammer. and also I could peel the surround off with my fingers...someone want to explain why this $30 glue did this? and yes there was enough glue....MikeyB did em for me, was spread around evenly....also when I tore the surround off some spots came off clean leaving bare metal...the glue came right off...wtf
$30 glue is actually very inexpensive. I wish we could get glue that cheap. The CA glue we use is over $230 retail per bottle. Add in the $26 activator and $70 bottle of primer. What is the adhesive you are using and what are the materials you are bonding with it?

Anyway, depending on the material you are gluing, many companies don't use the adhesives that give the best bond. They use adhesives that are fast. We spent 9mos working with one US cone vendor. They do have been in business for 50+ years and do cones for Boston, JL, EV, Bose, etc. We ended up trying to use them for the AV series cones when we decided we could switch to paper instead of aluminum. Their glue was a heat reactivated glue that was brushed on both parts, then heated back up to make the bond. The trouble is that a cohesive bond by nature isn't nearly as strong as and adhesive bond. After 9 months we still had cones and surrounds falling apart. Their response was that nobody else had problems with the adhesive and there was nothing else they could do. Wasted $20,000 and lost $500,000 in OEM contracts because of the 9 months wasted with them. Had to get attorneys and the better business bureau involved to resolve it.

i have never heard of a sub builter using ca glue on foam surronds...
Typically we don't use it on foam. Polyester foams will get melted by it quite quickly. Polyether you can get away with it if necessary. I'm not aware of what kind of surround he was dealing with. Our rubber cements are typically used on foam surrounds and are made by CP Moyen in the Chicago area. Loctite 410 is the industry standard CA and there is a higher temperature version as well. We refer to it as liquid gold. It's over $230 for a 1lb bottle. We've found a few better performing options that are less expensive as well. Loctite is all made in europe and the conditions of travel by ship can affect the final product. Adhesive Systems Inc http://www.instantca.com make all their adhesives here in the US and are much better for guaranteeing their products. Santoprene and EPDM are by far the most difficult materials to bond to. The loctite 770 primer with the ASI CA gives a bond that will actually tear the substrate before the bond fails.

We sell ca glue to our customers at our cost, ($15 per once) shipping is free if ordered with the recone kit. We don't disclose our glue formulas. We have built 1000's of subs, DD/AQ, with the same glue and I have never seen the surround/basket glue joint fail if the basket surface was prepared and the glue and activator were applied correctly.

bob smiths adhesives.

ok just never heard of foam surronds and ca glue before except for "foam safe" ca glue. do you use the aceatone or alcohol based activator?

well learned something.

i have used several types of black ca glue before some are thicker than others.

i have seen some sub manufactures use a black glue that looks like ca glue but dosent get as hard, little bit flexable. what is that?

Sounds like the vanity glue used around the inside of the dustcap to look pretty. LOL Just learned about that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
