Clipping

listen kiddo. use the 63 hz test tone. put it on. turn the vol on the cd player up 3/4. go to amp/sub. if your sub is playing this tone (you can hear it) then adjust the lpf down to a lower hz so that you can just barley hear the 63 hz tone being played. and make sure the gain on that amp is not beyond 3/4 of all the way up and same with bass boost. if you cant do this youre helpless =P
that ^ sounds like it will help me..ill go try it. but what good am I doing turning down my lpf and gain so I cant hear the tone? arent I supposed to be able to hear the tone? whats the point of turning it all down till I can barely here it..i understand what your saying just dont know why I would turn it down to where i cannot hear the tone.

but honestly..that helped and i understand that. just need some help explaining ^^ that one. what i just said above.

fail

That's not the correct way to set your gains, and I personally wouldn't set my LPF that low...
then how would YOU do it..I need to know how to do this so i dont fry my voice coils.

is it even that big of an issue anyway if it only does it for like 5 seconds each song? the only time the clipping light comes on is during some really high notes in certain songs but after that one part it goes away the rest of the time.

You just need to know how to set your gain? Most people on here are probably clipping their subs somewhat.
my subs are clipping a little each song..my 5 seconds or less..or maybe that 1 hard note in between chorus's or something in a song..so should I not be worried since you said everyones clipping a little bit?

It just depends how much you're clipping. Feel the cone on the sub to see how hot they are getting. If they are really hot it's probably too high, if it is just warm you should be ok. Listen for bad noises, smell for burning, etc. If you don't feel comfortable turn it down, or buy better subs/amps.

I personally use a DMM to set my gains, and I'm actually lower than what it says I could be at, but I'm ok with it. Even using a DMM doesn't mean you aren't clipping though. Low voltage etc can cause it. I would need a scope to know for sure, but its ok.

sorry i didnt realize everyone set there amps the same way. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif since youre so smart ill let you help him //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

What is the low pass filter set at right now?

And I'm not going to explain the proper way to set your gains when theres pleny of tutorials out there. I know for a fact JL has a nice interactive video one on their website. Search Yahoo for "JL Gain setting tutorial"

Well not everyone sets them the same way, but we at least try to set them a correct way...

Just putting the gain at 3/4 is NOT setting...most do it with a DMM the proper way, some set it by ear (which I'm really doubting the OP can do)
