Clipping

Can someone please explain amp clipping to me and how it happens? I hear it mentioned a lot but don't know exactly what it is and a search brought up 1000's of threads.

I am in the middle of deciding on what susb/amps to get and am just worried that if i make the wrong choice they will "clip" and be ruined, i am going through the link now. Does anyone know how to prevent one of these 2 set-ups from clipping...

1) 2 Brahma's running 900 rms each in 1.2 cu ft sealed enclosures (1 each)

2) 2 XXX's with around 1000 each in ???

turn the gain down...dont have it up to loud

Ok, so as long as I set the gain right they won't clip. I heard you cannot hear distortion in either of these subs, so where would you recomend i set the gain. I was going to go with a Tsunami 1800T which puts out 900 rms per cahnnel, I am guessing that is with the gain all the way up so how far would I turn it down?

Oh thanks for the link, I read through it and think I saw clipping on a friends boat when he was tuning the speakers. He at one point turned the gain all the way up and the speakers went from clean and loud to having audible distortion, that went away when he turned them down. I always have tuned my speakers on the safe side jsut in case, but if I can't hear any distortion and need a certain amount I don't want to ruin my new subs.
