Clipping

Hey everyone,

I am new and have heard people talk about clipping. I read in the one sticky in here that it was the amp this overdriven during clipping. Does this mean that the sub is getting too much power from the amp? Sorry if this is a stupid/common sense question but I am confused.

A really basic explanation...

Clipping results when the amp is being overdriven, you're correct. If you were to look at the output waveform on an o'scope, you'd see the amplitude peaks were "flattened"...almost like a square wave instead of a nice sine wave (at least for solid-state equipment...tubes clip differently). This could result in twice the power being sent to the driver - not a good thing.

Of course, there are varying levels of clipping, and a slightly clipped signal probably won't pose a threat. A fully clipped signal will sound like ***, whether it's from a solid-state amp or not //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well my van clips all to hell.....I think the only way to fix it is replacing the speakers and buying an amp.

That would do it. Running an external amp provides a whole lot more "clean" power, improving dynamic range and preventing that "grunge" you get at higher volumes...
