so if the father and sole provider of a family of 5 dies because he didn't wear a seatbelt effects only himself? not too mention the remaining for people will now be on welfare because the bread winner died?
it's tragic. it's also his choice. the price of freedom can be high.

According to many economists {Gregory Mankiew} , and others, and the book Unsafe at any Speed; you are more likely to be involved in an accident wearing a seatbelt vs. not wearing a seatbelt.
ALSO: Those who wear seatbelts are more likely to speed (AND AT A GREATER RATE OF SPEED) than those who do not wear seatbelts, and thus CAUSE more accidents.

HOWEVER: Those involved in accidents who did NOT wear seatbelts are more likely to DIE than those who did wear seatbelts.
so what is the percentage of american drivers who wear seatbelts vs. those who don't? if 80% of the population wears them, vs. 20% who doesn't, of course the ones who wear them are more likely to get into an accident

There is no way you can predict with absolute certainty the lack of wearing his seatbelt caused him to die.

Had he not had his seatbelt, he may have gone a different direction because he saw a cop and didn't want to get pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt.

The people who say "He would have lived if he had a seatbelt are idiots" One change in a person's behavior changes other decisions they make.

How come they can only remove the seatbelt, but do not consider other alternatives:

Maybe if he wasn't getting head from a hooker?

Maybe if he wasn't drunk

Maybe if a drunk didn't hit him

Maybe if he wasn't changing CDs

Maybe if he had a ****ing jetpack to get home....

See?

Not economist I ever met would do statistics that way. You have to weight them equally.

so you're pretty much using stats that are skewed towards your opinion.

also when a dude is laying outside of his vehicle dismembered, i'm assured a seatbelt would've 99% chance saved his life

Driving from point A to point B is a very dynamic processing involving not only the strategy, behavior, skill, and actions of the driver, but the same of other drivers and the enviornment.

Holding everything constant but one variable, is a good way to test. However, people only do it for that one variable. The do not hold the seatbelt constant and test other variables.

eh..i agree with the last part..but, not in the context it was used..the price of freedom is high. dying because you were too stupid to wear a seat-belt doesnt really personify that.
millions of people die from stupidity every year. as long as they don't affect my family, or yours for that matter, being stupid, they can die however they want.

I'm not. Had he chosen a different route, he may not have got in a wreck. See the post above.

Stats are not skewed which way, stats are stats and from those statistics, I draw conclusions.

youre missing the point..it comes out of your pocket, dude..instead of your kid getitng the latest edition of his geography text-book, they bought some simple green to get the coagulated blood out of the tarmac

say there are 100 million drivers. 80% or 80 million wear seatbelts, and 20% or 20 million don't. well of course the laws of averages saying the seatbelt wearers are going to be involved in more accidents, so to say well seatbelt wearers are in more accidents, is a bit skewed when most of the population wears seatbelts.
