Can't compare them directly as I haven't used the Alpine, but the Clarion is sweet. Nice picture, great functionality and pretty easy to use. The iPod interface is amazing as well.

I owned the 945 series...it had EXCELLENT picture...and I loved the LCD on teh front when it was closed. Great unit.

Depends on how well or "buddy buddy" you are w/the sales person, if you're dealing w/one. I've only talked to the local clarion dealer here three times and he'd sell me one for 1050. Take that for what it's worth.
