monday night this old dude tried to pull it on me when i tried to sneak a bottle of MD out of the liquor store. he started screaming "citizen's arrest! citizen's arrest!". ran up and tried to strong arm me. i punched him in the neck and got in my jeep. he was rolling around in the parking lot trying to breathe when i drove off.
my questions are as follows:
1. is that crap for real, and should i be armed in the off chance i need to "arrest" someone?
2. was i justified in my actions since he grabbed me like i was some common street thug?
3. did he really think this was going to work and he was going to be a hero?
what it do!?!
#1 You're an idiot.
Citizen's arrest is real, but it's kind of one of those things where it doesn't have a real definition. Technically, he could subdue you and wait for the "authorities" to come. Basically, if someone sees you committing a crime, they have a right to subdue you and keep you locked up until brought to justice. (AKA, if you break the law they can kidnap you, with in reason)
#2 No, it's an old man. You're an idiot.
If he was trying to subdue you, under the law, he had a reason to. So, you assaulted him. It's on your dime. Either that or it'd just get thrown out since he was trying to do the
moral thing and you were being a selfish prck.
#3 Yes, you putz.
I've seen plenty of times where shop owners chase down thieves and tackle their punk *****. I wish this guy would've done the same to you.
I can understand stealing for sustenance or an urge of necessity, however, I can't understand how people can steal things they don't
need. Like Alcohol, or electronics. Stealing an apple is a lot different than stealing a beer. Some would argue you're an alcoholic.
