Guys,

I narrowed down choice of my 5.25" components for my BMW 540i, 2000 to following speakers:

ALPINE SPR-13S (type R) $127 shipped (little concerned with low efficiency 86db

CDT Audio CL-51A - CDT Audio Classic $130 shipped

CDT Audio CL-51A-25 PRO - CDT Audio Classic $160 shipped (what is difference from CL-51A?)

in my previous BMW 528i, 1997 I had POLK AUDIO DB5251 5 1/4" ($120-$130) and was pretty happy, they were pretty efficient, loud but distortion free, little bit lacking in low midbass and though tweeters were not harsh at all, but now I would like to get something softer and smoother. Sure I can go with them, but would like to try something different for a change. Sure I will get sub too. What could you recommend and WHY from above list? I would like to keep price in low $100s, may be till hundred and half.

Thanks.

I've heard good things about the Pioneer TS-C520PRS 5.25" components. The 6.75" version got good praises for its quality and midbass output. Might be a little hard to find in that price range though. I found the 5.25" version on here in the fs thread and scooped them up to try them out. Not sure when I'll get them installed though.

Guys,

thanks for sharing your thoughts, appreciate it.

I've done more reading and the CDTs I do not look that good to me, everybody says it is better to move to higher end of their line. Probably now they go to tail of my list.

Now I more tended to MBs, but still concerned that a lot of people complaints about brightness of their tweeters. What about QSC line? I thought I can stretch my budget for them if I know I will get smooth silky highs.

RSd, I read that they love plenty of power, which seems I will not be able to provide. I have not bought amplifier yet, but thinking about JL 300/4, may be some old school Rockford or Phoenix Gold. Though JL stays as number one, mainly for it's compactness.

I am surprised about Alpine type R (13S). I can not find, any more or less meaningful, review or opinions about them. Just pretty generic "they good" or "they are harsh" type of phrases. They have the same sensitivity (86db) as RSd, I can guess they will require a LOT of power to shine, huh?

Anybody can compare speakers in discussion with Polk db5251 ? That way I could have some sort of reference point. Or may be they are better of above mentioned speakers I should buy them?

They are only 2-5/8" mounting depth
Alpines 2-5/32''

What kind of car do you have...they should fit fine

It is BMW 540i, 2000 (see my first post).

I mounted db5251 in such car (2-5/16") and they barely fit with small modification.

So 2-5/16" is the limit.
