Changing xfl VC config

I have an AB XFL1244 with a torn spider (older silver basket), I called AB and spoke with Bob for a recone kit... Figured since I'm reconing this sub might as well change the VC config to a D2 and run my amp @ 1ohm... I asked him for a xfl1222 recone kit and he stated that it would not work. I could have sworen that most of you recone to to a different impedance. Can any one tell me why this wouldn't work?

Could be a different type of coil. Or he only has the newer version drop inns tantric can build one and even make the sub better
