carpet or paint....? please look

most people i build for like the paint. you have to do good woodworking from the start to paint though. the tighter the box goes together, the easier it is to sand and paint.
Great work there. .. and yes, have to have really good wood work or at least a belt sander to correct minor mistakes.

well i am debating the same thing and i think im going to paint mine, but the only way i will paint it is if you think you can get a result like this

**** they all look nice. i really like the marble look though its different.

lol but ive always had bare mdf and tired of it....just cant decide
paint it with the stone creations paint from home depot, for the texture(it will cover minor blemishes), then paint it with a base color, then dip a 3" paint brush into a small bucket of your splatter color, and fling it on with the brush brissels.

it's more time consuming to paint. and you have to do a clear acrylic or something or it will scratch with ease. they do have a duller matte clear acrylic spray that works well.

dang thisis getting even better....so stone paint then black then splatter it orange, purple, green, yellow and white then spray acrylic protector on it......hhhmmm or plain black carpet...

that was one of my concerns....scratches.
2 coats of clear acrylic, either the matte or gloss works pretty good. the most durable finish is probably polyurethane or varnish, but it takes forever to dry. it's a pain. clear gloss lacquer seems pretty durable too, but i've had problems with the spray on stuff streaking and showing spray overlaps. it doesn't go on as smooth.

paint the inside of the port, and black carpet the rest.

either charge him more to paint and and hope it doesn't get fuxored during shipping, or send it bare and let him paint it. Just do the prep work on all the screw holes/seams for him...

Ah, the joy of decision time.

Everyone has a carpeted box. Screw that. Raw MDF or paint FTW. I leave all mine raw with the pencil marks still on it. Show off my scribbles I say.

Last box I built for myself, I had some Krylon enamel mixed to match my car. 10 coats of it, then 4 days to cure. Followed by 5 coats of PPG clear sprayed on. The paint looked 5 inches thick, still wet, and the brush marks in the blue looked so sexy.

Whatever you decide, make sure your box is fully sealed from moisture, as MDF will ruin fast if you have a minor leak. I say spray inside and out with Thompson's if you decide to carpet it.
