carbon fiber subwoofer box?

I wouldn't build the box entirely of carbon, but rather a layer atop fiberglass for the look that you're after. If carbon was better at holding pressure, high end enclosure builders (like those that build Alpine F1 status cars) would have been using it for years now.

Carbon is strong and all of that, but not in pressure situations when you're just making a thin layer of it.

I thought it was more that the military picked up most available cf...?
Who said Boeing was using all that CF for commercial airline use? They are after all, a military contractor and make several parts for fighters, etc.

I believe the majority of CF used for commercial airliners make up the tail section.

j31rob, that bud in your avatar looks amazing.

Whoa, I just realised that. Wth strain is that!?

Carbon fiber would make an excellent box material.

Highend home audiophiles spend thousands of dollars on carbon fiber shelving for their mega buck equipment because its the most inert material available (without excess weight) to dampen resonances.

They spend mega bucks on everything because the money is the point, not because it actually provides superior performance. In the home, who cares about weight? In fact if performance, not the use of some high dollar esoteric material, was the real goal they would use hollow shelves filled with lead or cement. But that isn't exclusive enough...

To the OP: Laid Cf and laid FG are about the same weight wise. The resin used is going to be the same for either (if the company uses both) and the resin is the bulk of the weight. The CF would be stronger if you were using it as a structural member in some capacity, it might matter. For a sub enclosure, totally pointless. If you want the carbon fiber look, go with a single layer cosmetic wrap over the top of the fiberglass once it's done.

Actual structural carbon fiber is what is in short supply, not the cosmetic weave that everyone here thinks of when they hear "carbon fiber." The weave stuff is only for looks. The structural stuff is ugly as sin bu strong as hell. Boeing and Airbus have cornered the market worldwide on the strong stuff. The pretty stuff is still widely available as evidenced by the fact that you can still get just about anything and everything in that finish.

I would love to have a woven CF subwoofer enclosure with the two UL12's I used to have...along with some lithium polymer batteries instead of this 70lb Kinetik in the trunk...

last year at a BMW show a kid had a carbon sealed sub box. He did it to save weight. It sounded decent but kid was into sq and had a small sealed 8". he said no different than a fiberglass box and it was braced inside just like regular. Unless you are trying to save weight I dont see the difference except paying higher material costs.
