Car Stereo at home

hey guys i would like to build a stereo for my house using car stereo compenents. kind of a fun holiday project. but i have a few questions.

i assume using a computer poiwer supply is the best bet but how big of one? to answer that question you prolly need some info on what i plan to do. i plan to start basic with a headunit and 4 speakers. but i would also like to have extra power to be able to run a amp, cd changer, sat radio processer, and maybe a sub (all in the future) so i was hoping you guys could lend some info on building one of these systems.

A. This question gets asked a lot, searching will find you more answers quicker

B. Running 12v equipment off a computer power supply is inefficient and "ghetto" at best.

C. To run all that you will need a VERY large power supply which will be pretty expensive. You'd be better off either looking for an actual dedicated 12v power supply or just buying actual home audio equipment.

why is running a computer power supply ghetto? most computer systems are 12volt systems.

and its just a fun project if i wanted to buy a system i would

No, they're not. Computer power supplies have 12v Rails, but they also run 5v and 3.3v rails. Your only tapping into one of the rails, so even if you buy say a 500W power supply, your not going to be getting all of it's power because your not using the other rails.

well ima computer nerd at heart and have a few power supplies sitting around. so im not going buy something that does the same thing when i have these babies that will work. i have a 750watt PC power supply that would be the backbone and if need be i could use one or two of the others to supliment. but for a basic deck and 4 speakers the pc power supply is more than enough. i just want input and insight from people that have done what i am looking to do. i dont care if its "ghetto" its a fun sunday project.

i am also going to build one for my shop, use it a the shop radio and test bench, but i do have a 100amp power supply, it is a beast, all i need is a head unit, and have every thing else, mids/highs alpine 4" type s NIB, sub amp Exile 300.2, and an alpine 10" type S NIB, i am boing to experiment with a few different boxes, i will do a port, and a boandpass, maybe try a transmission line.

But for OP, your computer power supplies can supply how many amps? running a head unit powering speakers should be fine, i would not try to power an amp with it, unless you want to let the smoke out.

you need one of these //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

the power supply i have is 75amps on the 12volt circuit

why not go out and volunteer your time at a local food/homeless shelter on a sunday instead of wasting your time with stupid crap like this?
why dont you not worry about the shit i do and go **** yourself. is me building a shop radio hurting you? nope didnt think so. seriously wtf is up with this forum. most of you guys are the kinds of assholes that other forums ban. so do you all converge on this forum and talk about how to be bigger assholes than everyone else? just reading a few of the threads and when people post any specs of their system everyones dissing them and telling them that thier shit sucks. why dont you dicks get a life. peace out.

Then you know that Power supplies are not 100% efficient so your not getting the exact specs that it says it has.

though ill prob get bashed by all teh leet masters of caraudio.com id also been thinking of trying this. but to use with the pc =P i guess ill have to look somewhere else because people dont seem to help here? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

We're trying to help...it's just generally a bad idea and since the OP doesn't want to hear that, he's getting pissed.
