cant connect to ps3 network. somebody help

i just got cod 4, and my girls trying to get online and play. it wont let us at all. if it does, it loads for like 10 minutes with the downloading game settings screen, then puts us in a match and half way thru kicks us out. i tried to run a connection test, and the actual playstation network is failing. anybody else having this problem or know how to fix this?
