Can subs go bad from sitting

I had a friend bring over a T1 he was selling it had sat for a couple years and when we hooked it up the spider and surround had come completely unglued! I also had one of my hx2 12"s have half a spider come unglued after setting for a while but I was able to fix that with some 2 part epoxy before any damage could occur.

I don't see this unless it was very poor quality glue. Most likely they were damaged prior to sitting and then the damage was discovered once they were pulled out for use. Could also be do to horrible storage conditions I suppose.

Well, the conclusion is that one of the subs is toast. i took them and hooked them up to my garage stereo freeair. the first one sounded like a subwoofer playing fullrange. muddy but clear. The other sounded god awful. If i put a finger on the back of the cone and pushed forward it sounded fine. It had been sitting cone-up on the shelf for several years. i wonder if gravity took a toll on it.

This thread just made me check my fi q subs I have sitting in my closet for the last 6 months.do to it being cold here in Atlanta I figured I check em to see if they were messed up from any moisture.luckily they're fine..whewww

IM at my wits end with these fvcking subs. I was getting ready to cut the bad one up to get measurements for someone to recone them. i decided to hook the bad one up to my HT reciever and run it freeair for a few hours just to see what happened....... Noise gone. So i took it out to the truck and swapped it into my box. Sounds great..... WTF, glad i didnt cut it up. Guess ill run it for a few days to see whether it keeps up...

dust can hurt them, also storage conditions. watch the dont go from damp to dry repeatedly it will cause them to get brittle. sunlight is a killer. and some older drivers had cooling fluid in them that once it dried up would lower the power handling capabilities. magnets also weaken over time also.
