They had no reason to get Ortiz. They had Giambi, who, at the time, was a MUCH superior player, all around. Ortiz had tons of holes in his swing in Minnesota...and was quite injury prone. He really was a risk that Boston got lucky on IMO.
Kevin Brown was a horrible move...along with Jared Wright, who has gotten hurt and missed significant time in just about every season of his career. Pavano was iffy, but he was also coming off of a career year, and he's not even 30 yet IIRC. Johnson was showing no signs of aging....why not go after him?
