Buying a starter bike.

Thinking about buying a bike in the next few weeks. Just something to drive around town since it's warm out that gets better gas mileage than my truck. What are some good starter bikes? I don't need anything insanely fast, I'd probably kill myself once I got used to it. I also haven't even been on a bike since I was 16 or so. Sporty, decent power, and gas mileage?
