ok i turned my bass boost on my amp all the way down and the gain is still where its always been at, but i dont know what to set the subwoofer level on my HU to, i heard to set it till i hear distortion, then turn it down a little, but i have no clue what distortion from a subwoofer sounds like

No, you set it to 0, and leave it there for good, unless you turn it into the negative numbers. You turn the HU volume up until you hear distortion in the door speakers, then turn it down some.... And set your gain where you hear no distortion.

if their new then it's probably the excess glue burning off..L7's are known to do that my L715's did that but the smell should go away after awhile.

If you dont have a test tone CD get a good song with a steady bass like "Throw it up" by LIL JON or "da blow".

I beleive JMAC has true 0dB test tones linked in his sig.

That is the gain setting thread. Just unhook your speaker wires, stick the DMM prongs into the + and - terminals, and play the test tone. Put the HU at the MAX volume you would normally put it at, and set the gain to put out the voltage that you figured out. It is not hard.

I recommend using the 0db test tones. For most users they can't hear distortion/clipping/over driving. So it is the safest to keep your equipment from crapping out. If you are an experienced user then the -10db or -6db test tones are better suited for you.

And most HU's have a sub lvl control. Some of them boost a certain sub frequency, while others raise the pre out lvl.

Well how easy is it to detect a distorting subsonic tone while its being played from your trunk anyway?
