heyy you got some skillls bro. i struggle to put together regular hip hop and youve got some catchy rock tunes which i imagine are so much harder to orchestrate. how long have u been into production and so forth? how did u start learning? sorry, im an aspiring producer and really wanna get going with a home studio. hip hop n rock are two different worlds but im sure if you wanted to do hip hop you could easily incorporate your knowledge of music into it. got any tips for me? i use a midi controller, fruity loops, and a bunch of well-known VSTs and virtual instruments. Good lucc on your quest to superstardom i see potential! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

thanks for the kind words, man. in fact, thank you to everyone for your comments!!!

well, let's see.... i've been messing around with recording for about 10 years now. the first thing i ever used to record was a 4-track cassette recorder. i just got into computer-based recording about 5 years ago. started out using cakewalk, but now i use cubase sx, which is just superior in every aspect IMHO.

for a while, i was using a simple setup--usually just one mic and a regular computer sound card. but just recently, i invested in a more quality setup. you can check out my equipment list HERE.

- the firepod is an excellent best-bang-for-your-buck interface. it's got 8 preamped mic inputs, as well as spdif and MIDI. the built-in A/D converters are really good too, giving you up to 24-bit/96-KHz sampling.

- other software that i couldn't live without is wavelab (for mastering) and t-racks (for mixing and mastering).

- as far as mics go, definitely decide how much you're willing to spend on a good condenser mic for vocals. you can get really decent ones in the $200-300 range. i kinda skimped out on my mic selections since my budget was kinda tight, but now i'm starting to look at more quality stuff. it's very important to try to match the mic with the person's vocal style. i know, it's almost impossible to do without trying every single mic. so just do lots of research and go with your best judgement.

- when recording vocals, i like to run them through an outboard compressor before it hits the recorder. nothing too crazy, but something transparent that can help deal with vocal peaks. look into getting a FMR Audio RNC compressor. those are really nice (actually, RNC stands for Really Nice Compressor), transparent, and low-noise. plus, it's pretty cheap at about $175. also, experiment with mic placement--where it is in relation to the person's mouth, where it is in the room, how big the room is, etc. little things like these can make huge differences.

- i never really got into MIDI or virtual instruments too much, but i have used drum machines pretty extensively, including fruity loops. the thing with using things like that is that they're typically pre-processed, meaning compressed, EQ'd, etc. when it finally comes time to mix the song, you probably won't need to do much with those elements. at the most, you might have to EQ them to get them to all mesh together. but don't let that stop you from experimenting.

hmmmm.... well, there's obviously lots more to it, but that's all i can think of at the moment. you should check out the forums over at recording.org. there's lots of useful information over there, especially on budget recording gear. if you have any more questions, just let me know and i'll try to help you out.

good luck!!!

just wanted to throw out a quick update....

we just finished recording another song. it's called golightly. all you movie buffs should know what that means //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif . anyway, the past month has been really busy, so we haven't gotten as much done as we would have liked. but we definitely wanted to get this song out of the way before christmas since we'll both be on vacation for the next couple weeks. but we plan on picking things up just as soon as the new year rolls around. we have two more songs left to record and we're hoping to wrap things up some time around mid to late january. then we'll finalize all the artwork and send everything out for CD production, hoping for a release around the end of february.

ok, here's the new song....

madam, i'm adam :: golightly

also, check out our WEBSITE. a few pictures from saturday nite's epic recording session have been added to the photo gallery.
