Burl wood question!

I'm working on some box plans for the furure and had a question. I'm soon going to have some burl wood interior pieces, and wanted to make part of my box match it as close as possible. But this is as far as i have gotten. What exactly is burl wood? Is it the type of wood, like maple, cherry, oak? Or is it the finish (stain color)? I'm trying to go for as factory as possible, and i think bringing the burl wood from the front, to the rear, will help it blend in better (not saying you can blend in two 12's in a Jeep)!

really good laminates look great but cost more. It would most likely run you over $100 dollars to do a decent size box. (unless you can find a deal) also the one problem with laminates is the edges tend to wear. and in some cases pull away from the MDF. I imagine if the box is bolted down or locked in place this wouldn't matter as much.

I'm going to do something similar to this, except in a Grand Cherokee. The grey will be the burl wood (probably laminate because it will be thin), and the black will be vinyl that will match the rest of the interior. Hopefully it will look good, ill be sure to post some pics when i get started. Thanks guys.
