So I have been swamped at my real job so box building has been cut back a bit. But my old mallet broke a few weeks ago so I decided to build one myself. This is my first time working with hardwood (maple in this case) but I think they turned out okay. I used 3/4 inch stock for everything, finished with linseed oil. To add some weight to the head I used 18 1.5 inch steel washers. My son (3 years old) wanted a hammer too, so that is what the little guy is for. Because 3 year old boys need hammers? I will be adding leather to both sides of the mallet to cushion blows, just need to go out and find a source for it.
If I were to make another one I would flare out the bottom of the handle to help prevent it from sliding out my hands, not that I think that will happen, but better safe then sorry. I think I may attempt a meat tenderizer (meat mallet?) next, we shall see.
